The Graduate Program in Toxicology, which is characterized as an interdisciplinary science program, was established in 1982 to provide instruction for master’s degree students. Later in 1992, it began to accept doctoral students.
The program is the first international graduate program in Toxicology originated in Thailand with a clear objective “to produce qualified researchers and academic personnel in Toxicology with teaching and learning processes of international standard”. The curriculum was designed by a group of highly qualified academic staff at Mahidol University. The program then became part of the Center of Excellence on Environmental Health and Toxicology (EHT), which was established in 2009, with funding support from the Royal Thai Government. The collaborating institutes of EHT are Mahidol University (MU, lead university), Chulabhorn Research Institute (CRI), Burapha University (BUU), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and Chulabhorn Graduate Institute (CGI).
As a multidisciplinary program, the Toxicology Graduate Program curricular revision and administration are being monitored by the Medical and Graduate Education Division, Faculty of Science. The program lecturers are highly qualified academic staff recruited by invitation from a number of departments in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, and Institute of Nutrition. Compared to other Toxicology programs provided by other faculties or institutes, which focus on nutritional, environmental or occupational toxicology, our Graduate Program in Toxicology emphasizes mechanistic and molecular toxicology based on the expertise of each staff member.
To date, the program has produced 108 graduates with a Master’s degree and 26 graduates with a Doctoral degree. Current students consist of 5 Master’s students and 9 Doctoral students, most of whom hold positions such as lecturers and researchers in both public and private universities. Some graduates with a Master’s degree are pursuing their Doctoral degrees with us, while others are working as research assistants in the laboratories at the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, NANOTEC, Department of Medical Sciences (Ministry of Public Health), Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences or other research institutes.
